A new study by Bryant Surety Bonds, commissioned by the Fantasy Sport Trade Association, claims that 20 percent of Americans 12 years of age or older currently play fantasy sports.
The gender split in the sector is 64 percent male and 34 percent female.
In an interesting infographic, the researchers say that the number of fantasy players has increased from a half million to nearly 60 million since 1988, with 40 percent of survey respondents saying the genre is a life-long passion for them.
The advent of the internet, the development of mobile gaming and the evolution of daily fantasy sports has helped drive the rapid expansion of the sector, which Bryant predicts will continue, with more major corporates and sports bodies taking an interest.
