Horse racing fans made the most of the four day Cheltenham Festival this week, with one betting software provider – Openbet – reporting that it handled more than 25,000,000 total sports bets during the 2015 edition of the popular racing festival. The sum contributed towards 146,000,000 account transactions over the four-day period.
Openbet reports that the 2015 Festival saw an increase in the percentage of bets that were placed on mobile devices, with an average of 63 percent of bets being placed via the channel. Meanwhile, the number of sports bets per minute going through the platform peaked at 20,000, an increase of 40 percent on last year’s peak.
The prestigious horseracing fixture is OpenBet’s second busiest of the year, in terms of simultaneous transactions, after the Grand National.
“The Cheltenham Festival is a critical week in the calendar for OpenBet and our customers. We are proud of our performance and reliability throughout such a significant and demanding event. The fact that a global retail giant like Amazon averaged 3,840 orders per minute[i] on Black Friday shows the sheer scale of our sports betting and account platform,” said Openbet CEO Jeremy Thompson-Hill Tuesday. “The mobile statistics underline the ongoing shift in player behaviour.”
