Sweden’s downward trend in the numbers of its citizens who gamble has continued, according to new figures released this week by regulator Lotteriinspektionen.
The latest participation study shows that over the past year 66 percent of respondents in the 1,587 adult survey had gambling in some form, down from 68 percent in the comparative previous year, which had also shown a slight decline.
Over the past three years the number of gamblers has fallen by 5 percent.
The level of those who admitted to being at risk of a gambling problem remained stable at 3 percent of respondents – principally males
Rationales among those respondents who had not gambled ranged from poor returns on their deposits to a lack of trust and confidence in operators.
Svenska Spel emerged as the gambling venue of choice for 52 percent of respondents, with 16 percent naming the horse race betting monopoly ATG as the nearest rival.
Trailing at third on 3 percent was Unibet in the Kindred Group, along with 2 percent each for Betsson and bet365. A gaggle of top industry companies – mostly Nordic – completed the picture with around a percent each.
