Former Will Hill director appointed as Gibraltar regulator

Former William Hill plc regulatory and compliance director Andrew Lyman has been appointed head of the Gibraltar government’s Gambling Division, and is to take up his responsibilities in January 2018, replacing Phil Brear who  held the post for a decade, but now has new advisory responsibilities.

Lyman served as regulatory, public affairs and compliance chief at William Hill for eight years, and held a top management position before that at the Association of British Bookmakers. He has also served as the UK Gambling Commission‘s director of monitoring and enforcement, and as an investigator and enforcement lawyer for the Financial Services Authority, and tax investigations manager at PriceWaterhouseCoopers.

Announcing the appointment, Albert Isola, Gibraltar’s minister for gambling, said:

“Andrew is very well known in the industry, here in the UK and further afield, as an authoritative voice on policy, regulation, public affairs and the operation and development of all aspects of remote and non-remote gambling.

“His experience with HMRC, the FSA, the Gambling Commission, William Hill and more widely with industry bodies made him an outstanding candidate in the selection process and we are delighted he is joining us in Gibraltar.

“Gibraltar remains committed to supporting the gaming community and to providing the very best in remote and all other gambling services, safely and securely, and Andrew’s appointment reflects this commitment and determination to remain best in class.”

Lyman will have to hit the ground running in January; his “to do” list includes preparing the groundwork for a significant number of new policies and regulations resulting from last year’s review of the Gibraltar Gambling Act,
