Andrew Lee, former head of William Hill Online and more recently president of start-up mobile money transfer firm WorldRemit, is to head The Stars Group sports betting division BetStars, according to a report in The Times over the weekend.
Lee was at one time a rising star in William Hill, with analysts predicting he would get the top job there, but difficulties with digital products during his watch as head of William Hill Online saw him leave the company in 2016.
The Times claims that Lee’s appointment at Stars has triggered speculation that Stars and William Hill might revive merger talks that foundered 15 months ago when major William Hill stakeholder Parvus Asset Management opposed the merge (see previous reports).
Lee is a UK chartered accountant and history graduate from the University of Manchester. Graduating in 1994, he has wide experience in major business consulting firms like PricewaterhouseCoopers, Arthur Andersen and Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein.
He first joined William Hill in 2009, leaving in 2010 to work for Bank of America Merril Lynch for a year. He then joined Jeffries as an equity analyst before returning to William Hill in 2012 as interim head of mobile operations.
In October 2012 he was appointed md of William Hill Online, a position he held for almost 4 years before leaving to join WorldRemit.
