GameAccount Network fined in New Jersey

Dermot Smurfit’s GameAccount Network simulated gaming provider firm has been fined $25,000 by the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement for breaching geolocation regulations by allowing small numbers of online punters outside New Jersey’s borders to gamble through the GAN Android real-money app offered by Betfair.

GAN has explained away the transgressions as the result of an unintentional and accidental activation of new software which allowed in six external punters who wagered no more than a total of $350, gaining access “in certain limited circumstances.”

The regulator notes that GAN pounced on the problem and rapidly sorted it out, but that the regulations require a civil penalty anyway.

Before opponents of online gambling jump on the bandwagon, it should also be noted that geolocation in New Jersey has been accurate, consistent and trouble free, developing to the stage where a gambler can be reliably and provably located to within a few metres of his or her physical location.
