Legislators in the Indian province of Telangana appear to have gone a little over the top in legislation signed into law this week by state president Ram Nath Kovind which places wagering and betting under the ambit of dangerous activities, the same class used to classify drug dealing and kidnapping.
The legislation passed through the state legislature late last year as lawmakers sought to ban all games involving monetary stakes – including skill games.
Lawmakers also passed a draconian Bill amending the Prevention of Dangerous Activities Amendment Bill, ensuring that any person found to have committed or abetted offences under the Telangana Gaming Act can be detained by an order of the Commissioner of Police or District Magistrate for a total period of up to one year, without any trial or bail.
