The government of the Republic of Georgia has invited applications for companies with the necessary expertise to evaluate the extent and value of its gambling industry, implying that the government itself lacks the necessary facilities or capability to carry out the project.
The country currently has a reasonably benevolent gambling industry environment with a reasonable tax rate of 7 percent of GGR, and comprises licensed facilities with around 6,400 slots, 90 retail betting shops and seven online gambling operators.
Meanwhile, local media reports this week suggest that Georgian lawmakers are already at work preparing new legislation that seems set to disturb the happy environment by imposing severe restrictions on gambling advertising, and introducing mechanisms to disrupt financial transactions with internationally licensed gambling operators accessing Georgian punters without a local licence.
A minimum age limit for gambling of 25 years is also reportedly part of the discussion.
