According to a first quarter report from the Malta National Statistics Office (MNSO), growth in the gaming sector saw remote gaming license applications double to 44 (Q1/2016: 22).
During the first quarter, the Malta Gaming Authority issued 26 remote gaming licenses, up from fourteen a year ago, and now totaling 543.
The MNSO estimates the gaming industry directly contributed 13 percent of the total economic gross value added (GVA) generated in the Maltese economy during the first quarter 2017, up 10 percent year-on-year, and reaching a total GVA of Euro 277 million.
Employment in the gaming sector increased 16 percent to reach a total of 5,458.
Estimates from the MNSO do not include indirect opportunities gained from the growth of the gaming sector, such are real estate, indirect employment etc.
“While the MGA acknowledges the positive results achieved during the first quarter of 2017, the Authority is committed to its continuous improvement programme to enhance its service delivery, governance and supervision of all gaming activities in and from Malta,” Joseph Cuschieri, Chairman of the MGA, said.
