Malaysian authorities have bust an online gambling and international football betting syndicate in a joint operation between the Kajang Criminal Investigation Department and Selangor D7 divisions after a week-long investigation.
Six Chinese nationals are accused of placing wagers on behalf of gamblers in China on English Premier League football games and horseracing.
“By making Malaysia the wagering centre, it would have been tough for the police in China to track down the activities of the syndicate,” Authorities said.
Thirteen laptops, eight mobile phone units and four modems were seized during the raid.
In related news, 14 people were arrested and HK$600,000 was seized by Hong Kong police following a raid on an illegal gambling den at which it is alleged online baccarat was being played.
“Inside the premises, HK$7,000 in cash and about HK$600,000 in betting chips were confiscated along with two televisions and a baccarat gambling table,” police said Wednesday.
Of the fourteen arrested, a mainland Chinese woman and a local man are alleged to have been operating the den.
