Hopes for online poker legalisation in New York rose this week on the news that the state Senate has included the potential revenue from licensing and taxing the vertical in its draft budget for the forthcoming fiscal year. The draft is still subject to finalisation.
A similar move last year died when online poker potential contributions were omitted from the final budget, so this year’s final budget will be watched with interest.
Optimists point to the success last year of legalisation attempts in the Senate which stalled in the House, and the more positive comments recently made regarding regulatory capabilities by the influential Assemblyman Gary Pretlow.
Legalisation bills are currently active in both the state House and the Senate (see previous reports) and if both houses agree to put online poker into the final budget, it will considerably strengthen the chances of legalisation measures being approved.
Final budget talks are expected to be concluded within the next two to three weeks.
