Authorities from the south China province of Guangdong have reported the arrest of 540 suspects alleged to have been involved with online football betting using bitcoin worth 10 billion yuan ($1.5 billion).
An investigation was reportedly initiated in May 2018 when a new bitcoin-only gambling platform caught the authority’s attention. Further investigation revealed 330,000 members on the platform, the involvement of twenty gangs, seventy mobile apps and websites and 250 online chat groups in a vast operation run by six kingpins.
The six were arrested from various locations in different provinces, had assets worth over 5 million yuan confiscated along with the seizure of virtual currency worth over 10 million yuan.
