Japanese news outlets are reporting on the irony of a July violent robbery on an illegal cafe offering illegal online gambling – a premises offering illegal activity that has itself become the victim of illegal activity.
Tokyo police were called to a violent robbery scene at the “Online Game & Cafe Darwin” on eighth floor of an office building in the Kishicho district, arriving to find two badly injured workers – one with a fractured skull and the other with major facial injuries – allegedly inflicted by a gang of truncheon-wielding robbers.
The employees revealed that the robbers had made off with Yen 1.3 million (about US$11,400) in cash, splitting up as they left the building to escape in cars and motorbikes.
The police have subsequently reported the arrest of five individuals who will not be identified until charges are laid. Investigations are nearing completion.
At least one of the suspects allegedly visited the illegal casino as a customer shortly before the invasion, apparently to ensure that no other customers were present at the time of the attack.
