According to Aiseiri, an organisation that run two addiction rehabilitation centers in Ireland, one in four admissions for gambling addictions are caused by online gambling.
The report compiled by Paul Mullins, covering three years of admissions data, claims an estimated 25 percent hike in gambling problem consultations since the increase in popularity of online gambling.
Based on 88 admissions Aiseiri said the figures had been released to highlight the need for a boost in the resources and services required to tackle the rise in addiction as the Irish Government continues to consult on a Gambling Bill initiated back in 2006.
Other points highlighted in the report include:
– 90 percent of those seeking help for internet gambling related addictions were men (79) and just 10 percent were women (9).
– 25 percent of gambling related addictions were linked to internet gambling with a broad age range of between 21 to 58 years.
– Gambling debts ranged from Euro 20 000 to Euro 500 000
