Quoting well-informed sources, the Irish Examiner newspaper reported Monday that the Irish government is set to hike gambling tax from 1 percent to 2 percent of GGR in the next budget, raising an estimated Euro 50 million by doubling the burden on operators.
Part of the additional revenue will be dedicated to gambling addiction treatment and services, the source revealed.
Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe is set to include the measure as part of his Euro 3.4 billion ‘giveaway budget’. The gambling tax hike will represent a significant victory for the Independent Alliance, which called for the gambling tax to be doubled and for a property tax waiver to be introduced for elderly people on fixed incomes.
