Israeli crackdown continues

The Israeli police crackdown on ISPs serving internet gambling sites continued unabated this week, with the publication Calcalist reporting that the police, supported by tax officials and the State Prosecutor’s Office are still serving injunctions on internet service providers requiring them to block specific online gambling sites.
The directives are signed by police district commanders, and it is not at this stage known whether the orders have been approved by the courts.
Calcalist reports that this week the ISP 012Smile started blocking websites as a result of the police directive.
Police are apparently acting on the orders of the Justice Ministry and the State Prosecutor’s Office, which recently issued an opinion that the Internet could be defined as a place where illegal games take place, and that measures to prevent transmission could therefore be taken.
Calcalist claims that last week letters were sent ISPs servicing sites belonging to respectable online gambling companies like Stan James and Victor Chandler.
It appears that more restraints could be in the pipelines, government officials are on record as saying: “Enforcement agencies do not view the blocked [ISP] access as the end of the story, but rather part of the ongoing battle against this widespread phenomenon, and more sites may be blocked in the future.”
