Giovanni Kessler, the departing head of Italian regulator Agenzia Dogane Monopoli (ADM) has been critical of the new Italian coalition government’s decision to remove him, saying that such acts of “political cleansing” jeopardise the impartiality of the position.
Kessler was replaced last week by Benedetto Mineo, and Kessler has complained that his removal was questionable, saying: “I was reset by the government as head of the ADM on the basis of a real or alleged party membership – no evaluation of skills, projects, results. A political cleansing spoils system.”
