A paucity of Italian Series A football matches in March – down from five to three playing days – is the main cause for a 20.8 percent decline in sports betting in the Italian market during that month, says regulator AAMS.
The drop in revenues to Euro 350.4 million has cost the sector around Euro 100 million in football alone, the regulator concludes, noting that as much as 90 percent of Italian sports betting is on football.
Reuters reports that the March pay-out ratio rose to 74.3 percent, close to the historical average and better than the 69.7 percent recorded for February 2011, AAMS said.
The positive news was that in-play betting emulated the popularity experienced in other markets, growing by 13 percent year-on-year, with the punters wagering on over 200 different events.
