The younger player demographic has shown little interest in traditional lottery betting, and Takarakuji lottery officials in Japan believe this is the root cause for the continued decline of the lottery, which in FY 2017 saw sales decline 6.9 percent to the yen equivalent of US$ 7.1 billion.
The downward trajectory in 2017 was a continuation of previous years that have seen sales declining since the heydays of 2005.
The steady decline is a concern for the National Autonomous Lottery Council operated by Japan’s 47 prefectural governments and its 20 designated major cities…47 percent of the sales revenues are paid to players in prizes, and 40 percent goes to local government bodies.
