The Leicester football club fairy tale achieved its peak Monday night when Tottenham were unable to beat Chelsea, creating the mathematical certainty that Leicester remains at the top of the log and is this year’s English Premier League champion.
The rise of the underdog from 5000 to 1 outsiders in December 2015 to league champions in May 2016 caught the imagination of not just the UK but the world as tales of huge bookie pay-outs to punters who took a chance on the long odds with small bets emerged, and the extent of the hammering taken by bookmakers surfaced…by some estimates as much as GBP 25 million.
It will almost certainly be the most costly single sport loss ever for UK bookmakers.
Because their victory on Monday was not dependent on them actually playing, the team was able to join in the excitement and festivity in their home city when Tottenham and Chelsea drew at 2 vs. 2, making the Leicester position at the top of the league unassailable.
