The London Spitfires, an eSports professional team made up mostly of Korean players, has emerged victorious in the inaugural Overwatch League championship held at Burbank Studios in California, claiming the first prize of a million US dollars.
The Grand Finals of the tournament were played at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn before a full house of fans and a global audience who watched streams and broadcasts of the competition.
The team scored a 3-0 victory over rivals Philadelphia Fusion on Saturday, winning the Grand Finals series 2-0 overall, Fusion’s runner up prize was US$ 400,000.
Most Valued Player was awarded to Park “Profit” Joon-yeong, who was able to dominate while using multiple characters during the Grand Finals.
London Spitfire entered the finals as one of the favourites, and after faltering early on recovered to dominate much of the action.
Organisers Blizzard Entertainment said that the success of the event motivates it to expand the Overwatch League competitions internationally, with teams from Paris and Guangzhou interested in joining next year.
