Most gamblers who take a punt on one of the many lotteries would imagine they were exceptionally lucky if they hit just one significant prize, but in the state of Virginia there’s a new multi-millionairess who claimed two winning million dollar tickets in the same draw.
Virginia Fike won the lottery twice on the same day with two winning tickets for a million dollars each, taking her windfall $2 million dollars. Her two tickets in the giant April 7 Powerball matched five of the six drawn numbers, reports ABC Online.
Fike bought both her tickets at the same truck stop, basing her selection of numbers on her parents’ anniversary and their ages at that time, divided by the year they were married. She was one of14 people nationwide who matched five of the numbers and were entitled to a million dollar prizes each.
Fike was in the hospital keeping her mother company when she saw news of the draw on television, commenting ‘Wouldn’t it be funny if it was us?’“
When she stopped by a convenience store, Fike had the clerk check her tickets and discovered that she had won both of Virginia’s 1 million-dollar prizes.
“This is the biggest prize we’ve ever had in Virginia of two tickets in the same drawing,” Virginia Lottery spokesman John Hagerty said.
The winner received a cheque for $1.4 million dollars after deducting taxes, whilst the store owner who sold her the tickets collected a total bonus of $20,000.
