Macau-based land casino operator SJM Holdings has hailed the success of last week’s eSports event, a three-day competition held at the Grand Lisboa Hotel and titled MDL Macau Dota2 International Elite Invitational.
SJM claims the international event was the first of its type to be held in Macau, with chief executive Ambrose So Shu Fai commenting:
“E-Sports is an emerging industry with huge growth potential and global viewership. Macau is put in the limelight with this major e-Sports tournament, which we believe will further benefit the development of the city’s tourism and leisure business.”
A statement from SJM informed that the eSports industry is formally recognised in China as an official sports programme, and that the vertical has seen rapid growth in recent years.
“The viewership of eSports in China is increasing and is gradually catching up with that of traditional sports,” the company claimed.
