Weekend reports in The Australian newspaper and other Australian media outlets indicate that the powerful Seven West Media group may be about to enter the daily fantasy sports sector.
The media giant is reportedly in talks with CrownBet and Fox Sports about buying an equity share in fantasy betting company Draftstars, and the parties are optimistic that an agreement will be reached prior to the start of the AFL’s finals series.
Our readers will recall that earlier this year CrownBet and Fox Sports partnered up to launch Draftstars. The deal created a strong rival for a DFS joint venture between TopBetta and Fairfax Media which had been announced a month previous.
If the Seven West involvement is agreed it will create a powerful DFS alignment; Fox Sports holds both NRL and AFL television rights, and Seven West has free-to-air broadcast rights in respect of AFL games, whilst Crownbet is the official betting partner for the AFL…the cross-marketing potential is clearly considerable.
