Malaysia planning major eSports tournament

One of the largest eSports tournaments on the international scene, ESL will take place in Malaysia for the first time early next year and promises to be one of the biggest eSports events yet, with tens of thousands turning out for the live audience and many others watching via live streaming over the internet.

The event will be the first Dota 2 (the game on which the competition is based) stop for ESL, in which eight teams of professional online gamers from all over the world will be battling against each other for a prize pool of US$ 250,000.

ESL and Resorts World Genting Malaysia have partnered on eSports in the region, and Kevin Tann, an executive of the Genting subsidiary, said over the weekend:

“eSports is a massive and growing industry globally, and we hope to play a meaningful role in developing the local and regional market. We are proud to be collaborating with ESL, the world’s biggest professional provider of eSports that offers not just tournaments like ESL One but also news, live broadcasts and support in the eSports community.”

Next year’s event will run between January 6 – 8 at the Arena of Stars. The eight professional competing teams will be announced in the coming months and will consist of invited teams, internationally qualified teams and also a Malaysian home-grown team.
