Government authorities are monitoring online gambling activities in Sarawak and Sabah, the two largest Malaysian states on the island of Borneo, promising to halt expansion of the pastime.
Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein of the Malaysian Home Ministry said authorities are determined to stamp out the practice before it worsens and have developed bilateral relationships with intelligence agencies in Australia, the United Kingdom, the United States and China towards this end.
“The collaboration is not only to address syndicates operating in our country but also those in the region and internationally. If this is not done, gambling premises raided today will operate again tomorrow,” said Hishammuddin.
In related regional news, Singapore authorities raided a second-floor shophouse over the weekend netting six suspects, three of which were playing virtual slots over the internet.
The Bedok Police Division seized twelve computers and other technical equipment along with S$2333 in cash and froze the operator’s account within ten minutes of gaining access.
Punters prefer the anonymity of the so-called gambling dens as they enable play with “cash for credits” without having to disclose credit card details and other sensitive information.
