Malaysian police report that a RM 15 million (Euro 3.2 million) illegal online gambling ring exploiting the World Cup football championship has been closed down in a series of 499 police raids across the country since June 14.
Bukit Aman CID director Datuk Seri Ahmad Najmuddin Mohd said 589 individuals allegedly employed as agents or bookmakers were arrested in the police sweep, which seized computer equipment and other evidence.
“The investigation found that all the online gambling activities used websites registered overseas such as in Hong Kong and the Philippines,” the police spokesman said.
