Marketing affiliates working with Playtech-licensed online casinos this week reported receiving notifications that all Marvel-themed games and related promotional material and branding are to be withdrawn at the end of this (March) month.
The William Hill notification advised:
“Playtech will be removing their Marvel-branded games on March 31st. That means starting April 1st, we can no longer promote Marvel games and must replace all promotional materials containing Marvel characters. But have no fear, other heroes are here!
“We’ve got an action-packed suite of Superman and Batman slots. Plus, discover our almighty Age of the Gods suite. Players will enjoy the same Marvel features with a new godlike look and feel, and best of all, the same great jackpots!”
Coral’s advisory was more detailed, informing readers:
“Coral’s Marvel slots are sadly leaving us at the end of March, but don’t panic! There are replacements coming in from the heavens with our Age of the Gods Slots.
Each Marvel game has an Age of the Gods replacement:
Iron Man 2 – Age of the Gods: King of Olympus
The Incredible Hulk – Age of the Gods Prince of Olympus
Fantastic Four – Age of the Gods Furious Four
The Avengers – Age of the Gods
Elektra – Age of the Gods Goddess of Wisdom
There is no difference in the gameplay, besides the characters that are used. It’s not just Coral where your Marvel friends have flown the nest. All games have been withdrawn by the provider, and will no longer be used as slots anywhere else.”
Asked about the withdrawal, a Playtech spokesman advised:
“All Marvel games, branding, advertising, demo games, marketing material etc are being removed from all of our licensees sites and replaced with other Playtech content.
“Our [Marvel] agreement has simply come to an end therefore we have to remove all games and associated material by March 31st.”
Inevitably there has been speculation that the withdrawal is associated with Disney’s disdain for any association with gambling, and its acquisition last year of Marvel.
