Massachusetts names more members of online gambling study task force

Massachusetts Treasurer Steven Grossman, who last year started appointing members to a special task force to investigate the possibilities and implications of online gambling legalisation, has named more state residents to join the group.

During budget hearings last year, Grossman said internet gambling “is becoming a major competitive threat” that land casino interests are involved with and said that if the United States decides to embrace internet gaming Massachusetts may consider putting together a state-based or regional online gaming product.

Grossman has tapped Joseph Sullivan, mayor of Braintree and former Lottery director; Kate Cook, director of Cabinet affairs for Gov. Deval Patrick; Beth Boland, a member of the Massachusetts Lottery Commission; Mal Salter of Harvard Business School; Tom Herman of Smith & Duggan LLP; David Fubini of McKinsey & Company; and David Murdoch, executive vice president of Honey Farms Inc. to join the task force.

The panel already includes Treasury officials such as Jim MacDonald, first deputy treasurer; Al Gordon, deputy treasurer for policy; Kathryn Burton, chief of staff; Jamey Tesler, general counsel; and Craig Stepno, director of research.

Other members come from the State Lottery, including Paul Sternburg, executive director of the lottery; Cathy Judd-Stein, director of policy and special counsel; Dave Sweeney, CFO; Beth Bresnahan, director of marketing and communications; Bill Egan, general counsel; and Paul Mandeville, a procurement official.
