The prediction by Juan Perez Hidalgo, who heads the Colombian regulator Coljuegos, that seventeen online gambling licensees will be in issue before the end of 2018 moved a step closer Wednesday with the announcement that international retail and online gambling group Meridien Gaming has secured an online gambling licence for its regional subsidiary Meridien Gaming Colombia SAS.
Meridiem Gaming Colombia will use the respected Meridien brand in its still nascent online sports betting operation in the country. Once live it will represent another expansion stage in the Malta-based parent group’s overall gambling activities, which encompass business-to-business and business-to-consumer operations across Europe, Africa, Asia and the LatAm region.
Hidalgo has revealed that Meridien is the third major operator this month to be awarded an online gambling Colombian licence, following similar awards to the Teclino and Alfabet companies.
According to the regulator, almost 1.68 million Colombians have opened gambling accounts with licensed operators.
Licensees are protected by a vigorous anti-illegal gambling enforcement system in the country which includes blacklisting and ISP blocking through collaborations with the Ministry of Information Technologies and Communications, local ISPs and the Police CyberCrime unit.
The regulator is also running awareness campaigns suggesting that local players are safer doing the right thing by using locally licensed operators for their betting entertainment.
