Mississippi Representative Chuck Espy is preparing the ground for the introduction of legalised sports betting in his state if New Jersey’s court battles to circumvent the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act are successful.
Our readers will recall that New Jersey has for the past several years been locked in legal battles with the national sports leagues and the Department of Justice as it attempts to get around the PASPA, which restricts sports betting to just four US states.
This week Espy introduced his HB806 measure proposing the legalisation of intrastate sports betting, but conditional on the courts ruling in favour of New Jersey.
The Democratic Party lawmaker’s proposal would restrict sports betting to existing licensed casinos in the state.
