The Mohegan Sun is one of at least two American tribal land casinos that are preparing for any legalisation of online gambling in the United States with free-to-play internet websites, the publication The Day reported Tuesday.
One of those – Foxwoods – has already achieved wide publicity in its as yet unconfirmed relationship with UK internet betting group Sportingbet plc, although a spokesman for the company has expanded further on the issue, advising that other online firms may be involved and telling The Day:
“The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation [owners of the Foxwood operation] has been investigating the possibilities of Internet gaming given the significant momentum and discussion it has garnered recently in the U.S.
“As part of this, representatives of Mashantucket have spoken with numerous major Internet gaming companies worldwide to understand the business and analyze partnership opportunities, but will not comment on any of those discussions.”
The publication additionally reports that the Mohegan Sun, owned by the Mohegan Tribe, has also been talking to online gambling companies.
“We have had and continue to have” such talks, Chuck Bunnell, the Mohegan Tribe’s chief of staff, told The Day. “I think the entire industry is looking at what’s happening in Europe and in the U.S. as it tries to craft legislation to clearly legalize Internet gaming.
“Part of our due diligence is to prepare for that possibility.”
