Chris Eaton, the executive director of the Qatar-based International Centre for Sport Security watchdog, made the startling claim this week that around Euro 1 billion is wagered globally on each English Premier League football game….and that most of the bets are from illegal sources.
Talking to media at a meeting in Doha on measures to combat match-fixing, the former head of security at FIFA said: “Up to one billion Euros is bet on each Premier League game,” and went on to estimate that up to 80 percent of the amount gambled on each English game is through illegal betting.
He revealed that punters bet mostly on half-time and full-time scores and that was where the “big money” could be made.
The illegal betting occurs in countries, or administrative regions within countries, where sports gambling is outlawed, Eaton claimed, emphasising that he was not suggesting that English games were fixed.
