The Chichester Observer reports the results of a mystery betting shopper operation, that took place at Goodwood Racecourse at the end of July, falling far short on age restricted gambling.
The inter-departmental joint operation, led by the Chichester District Council, in partnership with the Sussex Police, the UK Gambling Commission and Goodwood Racecourse representatives, deemed 13 out of 20 test bets accepted illegal as the undercover police cadets purchasing the bets were under 18 years-of-age. The other 7 bets were correctly refused.
The operation at Goodwood is the latest of similar test cases conducted at other racecourses throughout England and Wales.
“We have a legal responsibility to protect children and young people from being harmed or exploited by gambling,” Councillor Roger Barrow, cabinet member for environment, said.
