New Jersey governor Phil Murphy kept sports betting operators in suspense Friday, eventually dashing hopes for an immediate commencement of sports betting by explaining that his administration was still reviewing the law, passed overwhelmingly by the state Legislature earlier in the week (see previous reports).
However, the governor sounded positive about the new law, enacted following the strike down of the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act last month by the US Supreme Court, saying at Rutgers University event:
“We’re going to have sports betting sooner than later in New Jersey. We’re really excited about that.
“I want sports betting, believe me. I want to place the first bet in New Jersey if I can. But we want to make sure we do it right. We just got the bill and we’re going through it and we’re not going to sit on it,” he said.
