The Portuguese politicians may have approved the regulation of online gambling, but the practical implementation may take a little longer.
Esperança Figueiredo, a director of Serviço de Regulação e Inspeção de Jogos – the new regulatory structure that will oversee the market – said this week that it is unlikely that the body will be in a position to start issuing licenses before the end of the year, and that the first quarter of 2016 is a more realistic target.
Figueirido emphasised that until the licenses are issued it remains illegal to operate an online gambling enterprise in the country,
“We suggest also to visit the site of Regulatory Services and Inspection Games in www.srij.turismodeportugal.pt where you can see all the information about gambling and betting online, including the publication of the entities that can legally develop their activity in Portugal,” the director commented in an email.
