Those with interests in the New York State daily fantasy sports (DFS) market will learn the future of the popular pastime within the next ten days.
A bill, legalising and regulating daily fantasy sports, which was passed by the Legislature mid-June this year (see previous reports) reportedly landed on New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo’s desk Tuesday, US media reports.
The bill classes DFS games as games of skill under the authority of the New York Gaming Commission, with a tax on GGR of 15 percent allocated to state education along with 0.5 percent of GGR as a licensing fee.
DFS operators such as DraftKings and FanDuel will be eagerly awaiting this outcome as both companies suspended operations in a settlement deal with New York State Attorney General Schneiderman until the fate of the legislation becomes apparent.
According to US press reports Wednesday, Cuomo officially requested that the bill be sent to his desk. He will have 10 days to either veto or sign the bill.
