Following tip-offs that an illegal online sports betting ring was operating in the Taichung region of Taiwan, the national Criminal Investigations Bureau carried out an enquiry that led to coordinated local police raids last week, resulting in the arrest of the ring-leader, a man identified only as Chung, and eight associates.
Ten computers were seized as evidence of illegal activity, which a police spokesman said has been ongoing for the past year, providing betting facilities on major US and European sports events.
The spokesman told the China Post that the illegal sports gambling enterprise generated “billions of New Taiwan dollars since the website started operations last year.”
