Significant tax reductions which would have seen Albanian gambling operators paying 15 percent tax on gross earnings rather than turnover have been vetoed by national president Ilir Meta, according to local media reports.
The reductions were approved last month by the ruling Socialist Party, but President Meta claimed that the lower tax take would have a negative impact on the national economy, and that the bill was not based on “sustainable socio-economic arguments”.
President Meta also voiced concerns that the proposal runs contrary to the national strategy of restricting the proliferation of gambling activity among residents in the impoverished country.
