Hard on the heels of reports earlier this week that five US states and three civil liberties bodies have joined New Jersey’s appeal to the US Supreme Court for the wider liberalisation of sports betting comes the news that the American Gaming Association has filed an amicus brief supporting the action.
The land casino operator’s trade body has in recent months become increasingly opposed to the federal Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act, which restricts sports betting to just four US states.
The AGA filing Wednesday argues that PASPA has failed as a prohibitive piece of legislation and “presents fundamental questions about states’ sovereignty to define their own laws and combat crime within their borders.”
The brief also joins other amicus arguments in the case by asserting that PASPA is unconstitutional and discriminatory in nature and is out of step with current public opinions and morality.
