Police in the northern Vietnam city of Hai Phong has announced the successful demolition of two illegal online football rings that generated VND 7.6 trillion (US$ 340 million) in wagers.
The Ministry of Public Security’s High-tech Crime Prevention Police Department says the rings shared a common leader – Bùi Khắc Hiền (52), and that provincial and local police were involved in operations that resulted in the arrests of 22 individuals.
During the raids, police seized a Mercedes Benz car, the equivalent of US$ 8,900 in cash and other evidence of illegal online gambling on football games. The evidence suggests that the ringleader and his lieutenants set up the rings in June last year.
