Online casino operators are often secretive when it comes to player sign-ups, but regulators have no such competitive pressures and can often give a consolidated and wider view without it impacting the competitive sensibilities of individual operators.
That’s what New Jersey’s Division of Gaming Enforcement did as Thanksgiving Day drew to a close in the Garden State Friday, revealing that in that one day alone local punters had opened 5,000 new accounts at the selection of online casinos that have pioneered the state’s advance into the online sector.
The DGE also revealed that since soft launch testing of online gambling began in New Jersey on November 21, 32,277 accounts have been opened. A spokesman pointed out that this did not necessarily reflect the number of individual gamblers, because some punters opened accounts at more than one online casino.
Full real-money gambling started on Monday afternoon this week following the five day trial period.
Six Atlantic City casinos – the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa; the Tropicana Casino and Resort; Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino; the Trump Taj Mahal Casino Resort; Bally’s Atlantic City and Caesars Atlantic City – were the first to be approved for online gambling in New Jersey.
The Golden Nugget Atlantic City decided to wait a week to launch its online operation until it has resolved system problems .
