Argentine police in Buenos Aires have reported the arrest Friday of a 19-year-old local man they characterise as a “super hacker” whom they claim hacked into online gaming and international money transfer sites with criminal intent.
Investigations have shown that the young hacker was making around $50,000 a month from his criminal activity, leading a gang that included seven other people who are currently the subject of investigations, according to a security ministry official.
The Agence France Presse news agency reports that the ministry has described the hacker as the son of a computer systems engineer, and that he worked from home in a “technological cave” with several high power computers and other high-tech equipment.
The arrest in the police’s “Operation Zombie” stems from a probe that began in 2012, the agency reports. The sites that were hacked by the gang have not yet been named.
