The gambling regulator in the Canadian province of Alberta is currently preparing a presentation on online gambling for provincial politicians to consider, according to Alberta Gaming and Lottery Commission president Bill Robinson.
Speaking to local media, Robinson said this week that millions of dollars are spent by Albertans gambling online with offshore “grey market” operators, and the Commission believes that regulation and licensing will protect consumers and keep some of that money in the province, whilst making a contribution to tax revenues.
“What we estimate is about $120 Million or more is played every year” Robinson said. “By creating an opportunity here in Alberta, those dollars that now float away off-shore can stay in Alberta and be used by charities; can be used by our government for great programs right across the province.”
The AGLC is researching the idea for presentation to the provincial leadership. Robinson said that among Canadian provinces, only Alberta and Saskatchewan do not offer online gaming.
