Police action against an online gambling ring back in 2015 came to a conclusion with the sentencing of 64 persons in a Vietnamese court Monday, with alleged ring leader Wong Boon Leong (38) facing the heaviest punishment of 14 months and 24 days in prison.
Because the sentence corresponds with his period of incarceration to date, he was allowed to go free on payment of a fine of VND 100 million (US $4,400) and the forfeiture of another VND 500 million (US$20,900) in personal ill-gotten gains from the enterprise.
The ring is alleged to have handled the equivalent of around US$45 million in wagers, and its break-up made headlines around the world (see previous reports).
The case involved Vietnamese individuals acting as agents for the Cagayan-licensed online sports betting operator Dafabet, the court was informed.
Other members of the ring were handed sentences ranging from 3 years in prison to periods of probation on illegal gambling and money laundering charges.
