Free-to-play online websites launched earlier this year by the two biggest tribal-owned casinos in the United States, Foxwoods Resort Casino and Mohegan Sun, are performing well, according to an Associated Press news agency report.
Officials from the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and the Mohegan Tribe told the news agency that they want to be prepared in case Internet gambling is legalised at the federal level or in their home state of Connecticut.
Free-to-play sites not only prepare land operators for legalisation, building up the necessary expertise, technology and player bases, but serve as a marketing boost and source of useful player data for the land casinos.
Mashantucket chairman Rodney Butler told AP that about 50,000 users have already set up free-play accounts on the “online casino” that Foxwoods launched in January through a partnership with GameAccount Network (see previous report).
