Ontario joins the online gambling club

It’s taken awhile, but the Canadian province of Ontario has finally joined British Columbia, Manitoba, Quebec and all of the Atlantic Provinces in offering online gambling, featuring casino-style games including slots and table games such as blackjack, baccarat, single-player poker and roulette, as well as the sale of lottery tickets.

The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation unveiled a new online gambling site Thursday using the domain PlayOLG.ca, revealing that Ontarians currently spend around Cdn$400 to Cdn$500 million a year on off-shore gambling sites and that it is hoping that the new product will keep that money in the province.

The site has a slew of responsible gambling mechanisms that include a facility enabling players to set a mandatory weekly maximum on the amount they wish to gamble. There are also play-for-free games on the site.

Profits generated by the site will go to provincial projects financed through the Consolidated Revenue Fund of Ontario, providing support to hospitals, cultural activities, non-profit corporations and other charitable organisations.

Ontario has the biggest population of all the provinces in Canada with almost 13 million residents or almost 40 percent of the nation’s people, which could yield up to half-a-million online gamblers.
