Opposition is mounting to Sheldon Adelson’s drive to ban online gambling in the United States through the Chaffetz and Graham bills in Congress, with two US senators from New Jersey the latest to signal their intention fight the measure in Congress.
Senators Robert Menendez and Cory Booker claim the banning bill will serve only to push gambling back underground, where it could not be regulated, therefore presenting a multitude of risks and dangers to US online punters.
“Blanket prohibition of internet gaming will empower black market operators at the expense of responsible states like New Jersey, which have invested in creating a secure internet gaming structure,” Menendez said in a news release over the weekend.
In related news, the New Jersey newspaper Star-Ledger has just launched what it describes as an “informal and unscientific” poll based on the simple question:
“Should Congress pass legislation that would outlaw online gambling across the country – thus quashing New Jersey’s recent move to legalize internet betting?”
It’s early days yet, but so far 948 readers have given their opinions, with a slight advantage going to the “yes” vote. Here are the results as at early Monday morning GMT:
