Arsenal FC’s at times controversial manager, Arsene Wenger, is at the centre of Paddy Power’s latest “guerilla marketing” promotion, dubbed ‘Wengerendum’, which has been slammed as going too far by some club supporters.
Timed for the FA semi-final match between Arsenal and Manchester City at Wembley, the promotion consisted of PP banners at the start of Wembley Way which were titled “Wenger Out” and “Wenger In” – a reference to the debate among supporters regarding the possible renewal of Wenger’s contract with Arsenal, which expires this summer.
Punters were invited to show their feelings by choosing to walk under one or the other.
PP took some flak from football fans who pointed out that Arsenal has a commercial relationship with Betfair, which merged with Paddy Power last year.
