Online gambling group Paddy Power.com reportedly sustained what it described as “a protracted and malicious attack on our systems with the sole objective of bringing down our website” this week.
Players who visited the site found it out of action, and despite a “down for maintenance” notice a company spokesman later commented:
“We are experiencing a protracted and malicious attack on our systems with the sole objective to bring down our website and prevent our customers from placing bets.
“We have systems in place to defend our site against such attacks, however these systems have failed to protect us due to the sophistication of the attack.
“All our resources have been dedicated to analysing the attack and we are in the process of upgrading our defences to stop it re-occurring.
“We would like to thank you for your patience and completely understand your frustration at not being able to access your account in full. We, like you, know that this is completely unacceptable.”
Sites understood to have been impacted by the attack included Paddy Power.com, Paddy Power Games.com, Paddy Power.mobi and Paddy Power Bingo.com.
By Wednesday the sites were back up.
There has been no further statement regarding the occurrence.
